MEDIEVAL SCRIPTOR: INSTITUTIONAL AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

The article examines some peculiarities of the formation and activity of Western European scriptoriums at Christian monasteries of the Middle Ages. Also, some polemical issues regarding the interpretation of this term in dictionaries, educational and scientific literature are outlined. The author highlights the processes of institutionalization and technologization of scriptorium activities and their functional significance in the history of Christian, and more broadly, European culture.
